Abstract: By conducting a corpus-based study on the linguistic deviations in the two Chinese translations of Le Tour du Monde en Quatre-vingts Jours by Jules Verne from both qualitative and quantitative perspectives, this research reveals that(1)linguistic deviations exist in both versions:whereas Chen Shoupeng and Xue Shaohui’s translation shows a strong tendency of interlingual deviations,Sha Di’s translation demonstrates a tendency of intralingual deviation;(2)both versions differ in deviation types, which can have either positive or negative interpersonal function;(3)the direction and degree of linguistic deviations in the translations are closely related to such factors as social needs and translator’s competence. It is proposed that translators should strive for an optimal degree of linguistic deviation in the translation by adopting suitable translation strategies so as to boost positive deviations and suppress negative ones.
