An analysis of previous research on language anxiety in Korean language education

Abstract

This study explores the previous research on foreign language anxiety in Korean language education to understand the current trends and topics of foreign language anxiety. Brown(2007) mentioned that anxiety is the most significant affective factor in second language acquisition. It is known that the language anxiety effects on the academic achievement. About 705 studies on foreign language anxiety have been published in the journals as well as dissertation. Among them, this study selected 66 studies after reviewing and classified according to the types and topics. The types are sorted by year, dissertations and academic articles, and research target. The topics are categorized as language function, the relationship between affective factors and language anxiety, and others. It is expected that this study can distribute to reviewing the previous research about foreign language anxiety in Korean language education. 이 연구는 외국어로서의 한국어교육 분야에서 외국어 불안감에 대해 다룬 논문을 살펴, 외국어 불안감 연구의 동향과 앞으로의 방향에 대해 모색하 고자 한 논문이다. Brown(2007)이 밝힌 바와 같이 불안감은 제2언어 습득 에서 가장 중요한 정의적 요인 중 하나이고, 학습자의 학업 성취도에 유 의미한 영향을 끼친다고 알려져 있다. 그러나 한국어교육 분야에서 외국 어 불안감을 연구 주제로 다루기 시작한 것은 2003년이고, 그 동안 이루 어진 연구를 망라하여 살펴본 연구가 없었다. 본고에서는 외국어 불안감을 주제로 한 학위논문과 학술지 논문 총 66편 을 살펴 연도별, 유형별, 연구 대상별, 주제별로 분류하고 그 양상을 분석 하였다. 이 중 주제별 분석은 언어 기능별 외국어 불안 연구와 외국어 불 안과 다른 요인과의 관계에 대한 연구로 세분화하여 살펴보았다. 이 연구 가 외국어로서의 한국어교육에서의 외국어 불안감 연구 동향을 살피고 앞 으로의 나아갈 방향을 찾는 데에 기여할 수 있기를 바란다.
