An empirical research on the use of Putonghua in Hong Kong

Abstract

This paper uses the data from two language surveys conducted in 2009 and 2014 to analyze the use of Putonghua and its trend by native Cantonese speakers in Hong Kong in both workplace and non-workplace contexts. By comparing the two surveys, the change in the use of Putonghua is discussed with respect to the actual language needs of Hong Kong people, the social, political and economic environment and the effectiveness of the promotion of Putonghua in Hong Kong. In addition, practical suggestions based on the analysis are made on how to achieve better results in promoting Putonghua in Hong Kong, which can serve as references for the relevant departments to consider in their future revisions of the language policy.
