The article attempts to trace the history of the Fu clan, an eminent family of military officers and imperial relatives from Chenzhou Prefecture in the Northern Song dynasty. The political and military career of Fu Yanqing (898-975), one of the greatest generals in the Five dynasties and the most eminent figure throughout the history of the Fu clan during the reign of Emperor Song Taizu (r. 976-997), is first examined. It will be followed by a discussion of the factors which led to the gradual decline of the Fu. With the help of five extant epitaph stone inscriptions belonging to clan members of different generations, the history of the Fu clan has been successfully reconstructed up to its ninth generation.
