ConvAI enables natural, multi-turn, voice-based dialogues with real-time adaptive scaffolding—a critical distinction for early learners who lack the fine motor skills required for typing. Early learners can also benefit from vivid and interactive communication with the ConvAI tools. This paper examines the technological foundations of ConvAI, its evolution within the ECE context, and three evidence-based learning scenarios utilizing ConvAI: for linguistic development, cognitive development, and social-emotional development. It further summarizes the substantial benefits and challenges of ConvAI in ECE. Moreover, we propose future directions for ConvAI in ECE, including multimodal and multilingual support, children AI literacy building, emotionally aware AI system, and collaborative intelligence augmentation.
