Hong Kong Christian migrants in search of identity and a home in the UK

Abstract

This chapter examines the various strategies used by Christian migrants from Hong Kong who have emigrated to the UK since 2019, to engage with local Christian organisations to establish their footing in their new country. While the focus on Hong Kong Christian migrants in the UK has predominantly centred on the rapidly growing Chinese Christian communities and newly established Hong Konger churches, this chapter examines the lesser-known inter-ethnic activities occurring within local English Christian churches. This chapter presents three cases of local English churches that Hong Kong Christian migrants have joined. These cases represent three unique models of inter-ethnic incorporation, promoted and facilitated by English church leaders and Hong Kong elite migrants endowed with social and cultural resources. This chapter foresees a part of the Hong Kong migrant community gradually integrating into UK society.
