en_US
Ancient poetry anthologies, or pre-Tang poetry anthologies, remain an important medium for people to access, read, and understand the pre-Tang poetic tradition. Throughout the Ming and Qing dynasties, the compilation and publication of pre-Tang dynasty poetry anthologies gradually became a trend. The emergence of a range of new anthologies in Ming-Qing period brought diverse reading experiences to all kinds of readers, who were involved in the compilation and publication of new anthologies through switching roles to compilers or publishers. In recent times, scholars have paid more attention to the publication of such books in the Ming dynasty, but not much attention has been given to the materials produced during the Qing dynasty. This paper examines the newly produced ancient poetry anthologies in the Qing dynasty by focusing on the roles of readers. By delving into the materials of existing anthologies, this paper conducts a quantitative and macroscopic analysis while paying attention to case studies. This paper first analyzes the existing materials by conducting quantitative analysis and continues to discuss the “communication circuits” of these books in the Qing dynasty according to role switching processes among readers, editors, and publishers. By doing so, this paper outlines how different readers became editors or publishers in various ways to explore and present a preliminary macroscopic and microscopic investigation of the detailed process of reading, compiling, and publishing ancient poetry anthologies in the Qing dynasty.en_US
