Abstract: The magnetic properties and magnetostriction of a binary Dy50Co50 glassy alloy were studied in the present work. The DysoCoso glassy ribbon shows spin glass like characteristics with a spin freezing temperature of about 80 K. The magnetostriction of the glassy ribbon is reversible at temperatures above 60 K, where the glassy ribbon is soft magnetic; but is irreversible at temperatures well below 60 K, where the ribbon is hard magnetic. The effect of the magnetic structure on the magnetic and magneto-strictive behavior, as well as the mechanism of large magnetostriction for the glassy alloy, were examined.
