The paper reviews the major studies of the past two decades that have applied think-aloud protocols(TAPs) to the study of interpreting. It summarizes TAPs development in the process, strategy and quality of interpreting. Drawing on the safeguards for the trustworthiness of naturalistic inquiries proposed by Lincoln & Guba(1985) ,the paper specifies a set of criteria which are then used to evaluate the research designs of nine interpreting studies that adopted TAPs as their research method. It is shown that most of the surveyed studies did not meet these criteria. The paper concludes by giving suggestions on how to ensure the reliability and validity of future TAPs interpreting research.
