Description: Sensory Stitches showcases a unique intelligent textile system with a collection of illuminative photonic textiles and photonic fashion. This body of work is an integration of Artificial Intelligence technology and illuminative photonic textile design. Utilising computer vision and illuminating optical fibres, the intelligent textile system is designed to recognise hand and body gestures to customise its colour illuminations instantly. The patented design and technology transform conventionally passive fabrics into interactive textiles for dynamic customisation of environments and products. It can be applied within the contexts of fashion, interiors and rehabilitation.
Conventional illuminating e-textiles are often based on touch and on-body tracking. This body of work addresses the gap in research via the design and development of a mid-air gesture recognition system that possess the ability to recognise and interpret complex images for immediate feedback. It provides an intuitive platform for the user to interact with the product or environment via the familiar medium of textiles. This patent protected body of work is significant because it is the first interactive illuminative textile system via contactless gesture recognition with a unique knit structure that incorporates both polymeric optical fibres and textile-based yarns.
