Abstract: Navigation is an important part in our daily life that we need to move between places to work, to visit and many other purposes. Although the conceptualization process always rectifies the internal cognitive map, human memory is not a hundred percent reliable. External map, hence, is created to increase the successful rate of navigation. However, the limited mobile display area, the new ways of interaction, the difference in visualization media (paper VS digital device) and so on, all the new changes derive new user cognition in map utilization. This causes that the traditional map design is no longer appropriate to be used in the mobile environment. In general, there are two kinds of maps supporting mobile-based navigation including the general purpose map and the navigation map. The former map aims at providing rich geographical information about an environment in order to locate the origin and destination as well as to provide the route overview while the latter map aims at providing routing directions and guidelines in order to travel between places successfully. However, regarding to the new changes, the problems become more and more serious. This research, hence, develops an approach to simplify the general purpose map via the address hierarchy. In which, the map layers are reduced in accordance with the hierarchical address components from general to details. Horizontally, the corresponding geographical entities are emphasized in each map layer. Hence, the map layers and map content are cognitively associated. The prototype map is evaluated with an amazing result that 90% of the users agree that it is more readable and 82% of them agree that the route overview is more clean and readable.
In addition, this research develops an intersection-based approach to simplify the navigation of route. In which, the route and the intersection are simplified and emphasized independently so that the users can focus on the navigation tasks and get adequate support from the map when approaching the critical intersection point for direction modulation. In other words, the users are less distracted and hence, the mental load in navigation can be reduced. After the attempts on the prototype system, over 80% of the users are satisfied with the simplified navigation of route. Furthermore, in order to make sure the simplified map content can be delivered efficiently and effectively on the fly in the mobile display, a cognition-based visualization is integrated for continuous and additive map content reading. By analyzing the reading focus and the reading sequence, the progressive map visualization is developed. This approach is satisfying with the support of 80% of the users in the evaluation. In summary, the proposed cognition-based approaches enhance much the map readability and usability. In terms of effectiveness, efficiency and user satisfaction, the results are remarkable and positive.
