The creation of inlay-knitted buoyant fabricen_US
Design Research Portfolioen_US
The integration of inlay knitting concepts into swimwear design offers a promising alternative to traditional foam block buoyancy, addressing issues of bulkiness, discomfort, and restricted mobility. By developing a flexible and bendable knitted buoyant fabric, this approach enables more even buoyancy distribution and improved wearer movement. Layering the knitted fabric within swimwear allows for adjustable buoyancy, reducing bulk and enhancing comfort. Over 30 samples were produced, varying in knitting structures, fiber types, and buoyant media, with the optimal combination identified through rigorous testing and objective data analysis. The study examined the relationships between buoyant materials, yarns, and knitted structures using net buoyancy calculations and statistical methods, including MANOVA and multiple linear regression. Findings support a two-stage process for achieving the best knitted buoyant fabric for swimwear applications. Documented in three peer-reviewed publications, this research provides valuable benchmarks and opens new directions for the development of advanced swimwear and water sports products.en_US
