This article examines the military career of General Fan Ke 范恪(1011-1060), who rose from the rank and file to act as commander-in-chief of the imperial cavalry under the command of Fan Zhongyan 范仲淹(989-1052), the great reformer and statesman. A contribution to the understanding of the relationship between civilian and military officials in the Northern Song dynasty, this case study also shows how the promise of social mobility could motivate a commoner who opted for the military ladder of success rather than the civil route that led through the bureaucratic examinations. The article also examines the military career of General Sun Zhaojian 孫昭諫(1037-1101), the successor and the son-in-law of Fan Ke.
