PolyU Science Research Impact 2022 EP08 – Graphene Coating Solution for Wearable Electronics

Wearable electronics are microelectronic devices worn on the user's body to provide intelligent assistance, and include smartwatches, eyeglasses, jewellery and clothing. These devices require the use of metals to conduct electricity. However, metal conductivity is susceptible to oxidation and corrosion, which makes their maintenance challenging.

PolyU Science Researcher Prof. Chai Yang focuses on conductive fibre and fabric research. His innovative coating technique using impermeable graphene as the protection layer for wearable fibre and fabric can prevent corrosion caused through washing and human perspiration. This graphene protection layer can reduce the corrosion rate of conductive fibre by approximately 66 times.
