FAST Research Impact 2022 EP02 - Metal-coated Textiles
Fashion can make people look beautiful and radiant. However, colourful clothes may harm the environment, as the textile dyeing and finishing industry generates chemical and water pollution on a huge scale.
Prof. Kinor Jiang at the Faculty of Applied Science and Textiles of PolyU has developed metallised textiles with unique lustre and colour effects by applying sputter coating technology, a dry coating technology which doesn’t use any water or chemicals. Prof. Jiang’s research provides a clean alternative to traditional dyeing and finishing methods that cause significant pollution. The environmental benefits of his approach include no harmful emissions, no chemical odours and no industrial waste.
