Abstract: The surface of Ni-free Zr 60Ti 6Cu 20Fe 5Al 10 bulk metallic glass (BMG) was modified to be bioactive by using the micro-arc oxidation technique. A rough and porous oxide layer mainly containing tetragonal ZrO 2 and amorphous SiO 2 incorporating some Ca and P was formed. This layer adhered very well to the BMG substrate and exhibited a superior biocompatibility.
