Abstract: Footwear is not only essential for protecting the foot and supporting ease of mobility, but traditionally, it also reflects wearer's lifestyle, demanding, therefore, aesthetic beauty along with reasonable cost, quality, durability, comfort and fit. Ill-fitting footwear is a major cause of discomfort, pain and even foot problems. Protective footwear is always crucial, and it should be designed to ensure durable performance by shielding the footwear from hostile exposure to stains, rain and spills, and preserving its aesthetic and comfort properties. Typically, footwear is made of many components with diversified raw materials such as leather, textiles, rubber, synthetic polymers, composites and much more. There has been growing concern about eliminating hazardous chemicals used for the processing, coloration and chemical finishing of various polymeric raw materials to meet typical functional needs. Since the 1960s there have been many advances in new materials, technology and processing routes for the production of water repellent and waterproof shoes without adversely affecting the comfort and breathability. Shoemaking brands are looking forward in a major way toward developing new footwear with multipurpose functionalities and novel, environmentally friendly, durable, water repellent solutions. This chapter discusses footwear's basic material components and processing routes, and reviews current developments in technology for durable, water repellent footwear.
