Abstract: Energy consumption in building sector has been already increased since many years. However, the element of window to wall ratio of the building is slightly neglected for energy saving in Hong Kong. Heat gain through the window is different to the heat gain from concrete wall. The research focus on investigating the proper area of window to reduce the cooling load of the building.
Numerous case studies and the experimental study reveal that the conditions of indoor environment and the thermal comfort are generally affected under different window to wall ratio of building. More importantly, several case studies indicate that better thermal comfort is produced with larger area of window that leads to decrease the demand of cooling system. Moreover, questionnaire survey and interviews are evaluated that it is feasible and flexible to adjust the window to wall ratio in the design stage of the construction project by adopting advanced simulation software.
Element of window to wall ratio of public housing should be improved or increased so as to reduce the cooling load and the energy consumption of the building. It is proved that it is essential to conduct the comprehensive study for designing appropriate window to wall ratio.
