Abstract: Dimensional illumination is a collection of 8 interactive POF textiles : Calyx, Halo, Scion, Mystic, Bloom, Luminescent Waves and Bamboo. The creative inspiration was from natural landscapes that influenced the organic lines, patterns and structures of the textile collection.
The collection is distinct from existing research that were based on flat woven POF textiles, this research focused on creating textures and three dimensional structural effects via the Jacquard loom. This is challenging due to the fragile and brittle nature of the POFs, the fibres tend to break when subjected to abrupt angles and pressure. Weave patterns, cloth structures and materials were adapted to accommodate the fundamental characteristics of the POFs. New textile structures for POFs were made with developments in double cloth and weft backed weave on the Jacquard loom. The novel three dimensional structures offer tactility and expands textile and component integration possibilities. The collection of textiles were integrated with Bluetooth technology and can be remotely controlled by a specifically designed application downloaded onto a typical smartphone.
This collection of textiles was peer reviewed via a solo exhibition by Anne Smith, Dean of Academic Programmes, Central Saint Martins, UK.
