Abstract: This paper presents a comprehensive numerical investigation into residual stresses in welded H-sections through the use of thermo-mechanical coupled analyses in 2 D finite element models. After a thorough calibration against numerical results obtained from 3 D models, the 2 D model is validated to be able to predict both thermal and mechanical responses of welded H-sections satisfactorily. The calibrated 2 D models were then employed to investigate residual stresses in welded H-sections of S355 and S690 steel systematically. Comparison on residual stress patterns of these welded H-sections is presented to provide key technical information for structural design.
