Abstract: Special concentrically braced frames (SCBFs) are widely used in high seismic regions due to structural efficiency and high ductility for energy dissipation. SCBFs are allowed for large inelastic deformation through tensile yielding, buckling and post-buckling behaviors of braces. For this reason, the accurate modeling of braces with acceptable computational costs is vital to capture the real structural behavior of SCBFs subjected to earthquakes. In this paper, a new curved flexibility based beam-column element is proposed for time history analysis of SCBFs. The proposed flexibility-based type element considers member initial imperfection and distributed plasticity along the member length and therefore one element per member is generally sufficient for practical use. On the contrary, several elements per member in previous study are required to capture the complex behavior of braces under cyclic loading. Several examples are provided to illustrate the accuracy and validity of the proposed element for seismic design of SCBFs.
