Abstract: This paper presents an experimental investigation into hysteretic behaviour of high strength S690 steel plates and welded sections. A total of twelve standard tensile tests on the steel plates and the welded sections were conducted to determine their basic mechanical properties. A total of eight low cycle high strain cyclic tests on test coupons of the steel plates and the welded sections were also conducted according to a new testing method proposed by the authors. These cyclic tests were carried out under different targeted strains, namely, 25, 5.0, 7.5 and 10 % at a loading cycle frequency of 0.1 Hz to examine hysteretic ductility of these test coupons.
