Abstract: Modern microprocessors used in personal computers have built in parallel computing features. In general, these microprocessors support Single Instruction Multiple Data (SIMD) type parallel computing mechanism. Recently, dual-CPU systems are becoming more common and therefore, it is possible to combine the SIMD mechanism and the computing power that comes with two microprocessors to form a two-level parallel computing system. In this paper, we present combined utilization of two types of parallelism and demonstrate its performance on a computationally intensive image processing algorithm. Our results show that utilizing the bi-level parallel mechanism, a far superior speed-up can be achieved than those by using only two CPUs.
