It is quite common in languages that some extra meaning could be inferred from the proposition represented by a clause or part of it.One of the cases is the discourse background proposition being investigated here, which is marked by a syntactic element in another clause, such as the adverbial genben(根本)that indicates the existence of a background proposition in the discourse that is in contrast with the proposition of the local clause.A background proposition is different from a presupposition which is based on the semantic content of a lexical item and is not the same as an implicature which is based on the whole proposition. The discussion on the nature and trigger~ing mechanism of background proposition will provide insights for the study of semantics and pragmatics.
