Abstract: While the low-cost air transportation is experiencing tremendous growth in recent years, it seems that low-cost carriers (LCCs) in China are less developed and lag behind the LCC development in US and Europe. This paper therefore offers an updated overview of LCC development in China, with a comparison with European LCCs to illustrate its backwardness. Next, it examines the bottlenecks that Chinese LCCs are suffering from, which include incomplete deregulations, fierce traffic competitions from both full-service carriers (FSCs) and high-speed railway (HSR), immature operational strategies, and inadequate awareness towards LCCs in Chinese market. Furthermore, it identifies and evaluates the potentials for LCCs to develop in China focusing on the factors of the nation’s economy, demography, geography, technology, and policies. We find that LCCs can be greatly promising in China. Lastly, the corresponding recommendations for both government and LCC companies in China are provided.
