Abstract: Wind power development is urgently required to facilitate development of Islands in South China Sea. Meteorological data of 6 islands are investigated in this paper. Weibull distribution is utilized to assess wind power resource. Potential wind power generation of 4 small wind turbines is analyzed. The generalized Pareto distribution based Peak over threshold approach is utilized to estimate wind extreme of 50-year recurrence interval. It is uncovered that there is notable uneven spatial distribution in wind resource and wind extreme of 50-year recurrence interval. The Dongsha and Renjuntang are of highest wind resource while wind resource in Yongxing, Shanhu, Taiping, and Nanzi Islands are much poorer. Since tropical cyclones tend to occur in the higher latitude, wind extreme of 50-year recurrence interval in Renjuntang, Island in the southern of South China Sea, is much lower than that of other Islands.
