Abstract: Non-destructive testing techniques are widely used for building diagnosis in obtaining objective evidence on building conditions such as concrete strength, water seepage, steel reinforcement corrosion, spalling concrete, etc. to ensure building and civil engineering structure’s safety. To obtain reliable test results and less influence of bias due to human factors, performing such non-destructive testing techniques requires well-trained test operators, calibrated equipment, proper handling of test items and correct testing methods. For such purposes, the authors have been advocating the use of accredited service providers, which is competent in providing the service in accordance with international and local standards of practice as the service to be provided has been rigorously and regularly assessed by independent specialist in the area. Hong Kong Accreditation Service, an accreditation body in Hong Kong, has organised relevant proficiency testing programmes for accredited and applicant organisations to ensure the competence of the service providers in these test areas. This paper presents the details of two proficiency testing programmes covering three building diagnostic tests (i.e. covermeter survey, half-cell potential measurement and passive infrared thermography) with respect to methodology, proficiency test items and test analysis.
