Abstract: Purpose: To investigate the long-term effect of overnight orthokeratology on refraction, visual acuity (VA) and ocular health in children and adolescence.
Methods: 59 subjects were recruited and examined before treatment, and biannually after commencement of lens wear for 2 years. Assessments included refraction and VA, autokeratometry, corneal topography, non-contact tonometry, pachometry and specular microscopy for central and peripheral cornea, and biomicroscopy
Results: 50 subjects (23 male, 27 female; median age: 10 years old) completed the study. Results from the right eyes were analyzed. Myopic reduction and corneal flattening stabilized within the first 6 months. During 2 years, changes in spherical equivalent and corneal flattening were 2.46-2.71 D and 1.39-1.61 D respectively, and the mean post-treatment unaided VA was 0.10 logMAR.
Conclusions: We confirmed previous findings that changes in refraction and VA, corneal curvature, CT and IOP occurred within the first few months of lens wear. Our results show that the treatment, with close monitoring, is safe as no clinically significant adverse effects on cornea were found.
