Abstract: The authors perform a first-principles study of synthesized CrB4, showing that its shear modulus is higher than that of superhard WB4, and also larger than its bulk modulus. Boron atoms in CrB4 form a strong covalent cage, which dramatically increases its mechanical strength. The appearance of a pseudogap near the Fermi level indicates that CrB4 is a stable compound.
