Abstract: Due to the constraints of the cross-strait official relationship between Taiwan and China, Taiwanese nationals are not able to land directly in mainland China. This makes Hong Kong the most popular destination by in-transit Taiwanese visitors. This paper investigates the historical background for the Taiwanese visitors to Hong Kong. The investigation scope covers both the periods of pre-handover and post-handover of the political sovereignty of Hong Kong. This paper also analyzes the rationale for the decrease in demand for Taiwanese visitors to Hong Kong after the political handover. Using time series tourism demand forecasting models, the number of Taiwanese visitor arrivals in Hong Kong for the period 1999 to 2008 is forecasted. On the basis of the forecasted demand for Taiwanese visitors to Hong Kong, implications and recommendations are provided for marketing Hong Kong to Taiwanese travelers.
