Abstract: This paper examines the need for and the application of measured labour productivity standards in construction firms. Beginning with an overview of experience gained amongst overseas contractors, the paper describes various methods of measuring labour productivity standards within the construction industry. Continuing, a cost-effective method of measuring site labour performance coefficients is described. Finally, suggestions are made about the potential of applying such coefficients to bidding and site management control. Although many main contractors may find such a system useful, we believe that its greatest potential may be realized at the level of the sub-contractor. The examples used to illustrate the concepts have been selected with this in mind.
