Abstract: The sensitivity of output power of erbium fiber laser to intra-cavity loss is investigated theoretically and experimentally. The laser rate equations are modified to analyze the output characteristics of fiber laser under different pump powers and intra-cavity losses. The high sensitivity can be achieved when pump power is close to threshold value. Experiments are carried out and the results agree with the theoretical expectations. An intra-cavity gas sensor is demonstrated experimentally.
