Abstract: In this paper, two new broadcasting protocols are proposed for providing video-on-demand (VoD) services in multicast environment. The two protocols are developed by introducing a new first-segment delivery scheme for the skycraper and staggered protocols. With our approach, the first segment of a video is further divided into a number of small pieces so that customers can download the request data and start watching the video in a shorter time. The results show that the start-up latency for users is greatly reduced when using our new protocols.
