Abstract: The development of building contractors in China is vital to the national economy. The level of operation and the competitiveness of the contractors would influence the development of the building industry. In accordance to the empirical analysis of the operation efficiency of the 85 contractors in Jiangsu Province, the results clearly describe the development level of building contractors. This analysis provides information to the Jiangsu government to formulate the regulations and policies to enhance the operation efficiency in the building industry. Current research is to analyze the situation of the Chinese building contractors in recent years and to investigate their operation levels whether have been met the requirements of the further development. The paper suggests an evaluation model to the supervision departments and construction market parties to evaluate and to improve the operation level of building contractors in construction market. The analysis and recommendations for improvement should be beneficial to the Chinese government and building contractors.
