Abstract: The applications of Linear Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (LPMSMs) are becoming more and more popular in the semiconductor package industry. This is due to the fact that substantial cost can be saved through reduced mechanical parts, and simple mechanical adjustments and alignments. LPMSM also improves the speed, precision and the overall reliability. In many industrial processes, there are needs for the transportation of various work loads with different masses from one place to another by LPMSMs. Examples are transportation of the lead-frame to the bonding platform, and the processed lead-frame to the storage magazine. These factors attract an investigation into the high-speed robust control for LPMSM. The objective of this research project is to investigate the LPMSM characteristics, and to develop a robust and high-performance fully digital drive for the high-speed and high-precision operation of LPMSM. The investigation is divided into 3 stages: (i) Construct a fully digital drive for LPMSM, and perform closed-loop position control under existing driving method. Investigate its performance and shortcomings. (ii) Propose a robust and high-performance driving scheme that is suitable for the high-speed and high-precision control of LPMSM. This includes: (a) the modeling of the system drive, and (b) the simulation of the driving scheme using Matlab/Simulink. (iii) Implement in hardware the proposed driving scheme and verify its performance.
