Abstract: Energy consumption in electricity industry has been an increasing concern due to its scale of utilization, especially in developing countries like China, which leads to development of various optimization tools. In this paper, a reactive-power optimization algorithm based on traditional primal-dual interior point algorithm is presented to solve energy consumption problems of large-scale power systems with discrete control variables. It operates as a successive discretization of the discrete control variables of an optimization process by incorporating penalty function into nonlinear primal-dual interior-point algorithm. The envisaged algorithm is applied in one typical large scale power grid in China for the purpose of reducing the grid loss. The numerical results of the system show that the proposed method can handle the energy consumption problem effectively with good convergence and accuracy.
