Abstract: There is a general lack of literatures on the discussion of design elements and processes of intimate apparel. Using bras as an example, this paper examines the various aspects of consideration, including customer performance, essential elements, sources of inspiration and difficulties of design, during the process of designing intimate apparel.
An interview with a total of sixteen intimate apparel designers in Hong Kong revealed that different demands by customers in Europe and Asia could affect the design of intimate apparel. The seven major design elements of intimate apparel identified are fitting, sizing, material, fashion trend, marketing information, clothing functions and sewing specification. In addition, there are seven sources of design inspiration comprising fashion shows, fabric fairs, magazines, window displays, past design; outerwear design and other brands’ design. Results also show that common difficulties on design of intimate apparel are concentrated in four aspects - fitting and sizing problems, pattern and sewing limitations, balance of aesthetic and functional performance, and material selection.
