Abstract: Hong Kong, a metropolitan economy with poor nature sources and far away from the important denim markets, has been played an important role in the world denim market in the last few decades. It was the second most important supplier in the U.S. market and the fourth largest non-EU supplier in the EU market. This paper reports a research on the history of the Hong Kong denim industry with analysis of its current status, production capacity and sales. Hong Kong denim industry operates in a good business environment with free market, developed infrastructure and sound legal system. The denim sector as an important part of the textile and clothing industries of Hong Kong, has been benefited from the local textile & clothing clusters that provide close links with suppliers and customers. The denim industry has strengths in flexible and dynamic manufacturing, good understanding of the international markets, weakness in high manufacturing costs and low R&D capability, opportunities from Hong Kong as an emerging fashion centre in Asia, and threats from developing countries in Asia and south America.
