Abstract: The tensile strength loss of the 1, 2, 3, 4-butanetetracarboxylic acid (BTCA) crosslinked ramie fabric was studied. Similar to the tensile properties of the crosslinked cotton fabric, the tensile strength loss of the crosslinked ramie was mainly caused by the acid-degradation and crosslinking reaction of the cellulose molecular chains. By comparing, the tensile strength loss of the crosslinked ramie fabric was much more serious than that of the cotton fabric in attending the same degree of wrinkle recovery. The magnitudes of tensile strength loss caused by the acid-degradation and that by the crosslinking reaction were determined by saponifying the crosslinked ramie fabric with NaOH solution.
