Abstract: This paper introduces a new approach of 3D body scanning in relations to the international research and development of similar kinds of products. Using 16 benchmarking parameters, the performances of 11 commercial body scanners are evaluated. Currently, there are four categories of body scanning technologies including laser, infrared, structure light and photogrammetry. Some of these scanners are very sophisticated but they tend to be rather expensive. Others are less costly but require large space. Using structured light, the newly invented CubiCam system adopts an optical design with wide coverage that can capture an image in a short distance with high resolution. It operates in normal room light condition and therefore does not require a scanning booth. This mobile and portable system provides a low-cost and compact alternative that is particularly suitable for the apparel industry. Since only a fraction of a second is required for image capturing, it is particular suitable for humans especially children. Similar to the limitations of other optical methods, it requires a white and smooth surface for automatic body measurements.
