Abstract: Design knowledge out of the range of geometry and topology plays the key role for design ideation, especially at conceptual stage. In this study, it introduces a new way to represent shape models by dynamic design information-the dynamic shape representation (DSR). At the basis of DSR, the shape grammars of DSR present design model by design languages originated from different design intentions. Designers use design behaviors to change the solution until the final solution is confirmed. The new rule application way-action capture model and three new types of shape rules are proposed for capturing the design knowledge during design process. Design languages with different design intentions generated from the same design model can create different design families within generative mechanism. Through preliminary experiments on furniture design, the validity and feasibility of the proposed representation are proved. And positive responses are received from professional designers.
