Abstract: A number of 3D foot scanning systems that enable fast, dense and easy foot measurements are now available in the market. This study aims to investigate the possibility of adopting market available 3D scanning systems for 3D foot geometry evaluation in heel elevated conditions. In this study, the working principle, characteristics, strengths and limitations of available 3D foot scanning systems in the current market are reviewed. A pilot study has been carried out to evaluate the scanning performance of a typical 3D foot scanner and a general-purpose laser scanner in acquiring 3D foot scans for subjects who are standing (1) flat on floor/scanning platform, and with their heels uplifted by (2) 1 cm, (3) 5 cm and (4) 8 cm respectively. Incorrect measurements and missing data are observed in the 3D scans obtained from the 3D foot scanner once the heel was uplifted, while the other scanning system takes too long to scan, which might result in data inconsistencies due to participant fatigue. Possible solutions are suggested for acquiring 3D foot geometry in heel-elevated conditions.
