Abstract: Nowadays, healthcare and hygiene products are becoming more and more important in the field of technical textiles because of the specificity of their end uses. In this study, we have developed a pair of hygienic socks loaded with antifungal microcapsules especially for the treatment of athlete's foot (tinea pedis). First, antifungal clotrimazole/chitosan microcapsules are prepared via an oil-in-water emulsion technique and socks with moisture control are studied and selected. Then, medical hygienic socks with drug loaded microcapsules are developed by spraying the clotrimazole/chitosan microcapsules onto the socks. The socks have been studied in a preliminary clinical study. The complete cure rate of tinea pedis is significantly better in the active, group in comparison with the control group (84.62% vs. 42.85%, p = 0.011) at the end of a 4-week period.
