Abstract: This paper presents a hybrid-excited electric continuous variable transmission system for hybrid electric vehicles. The key of this paper is to develop a machine with dual mechanical port and dual electrical port to allow the mechanical power from the internal combustion engine and the electrical power from the electricity storage system to be combined and split according to different driving conditions. The main merit is that the radial flux and axial flux hybrid PM machine windings can be independently designed and continuously controlled. The magnets are innovatively arranged in a flux-concentration configuration to provide radial and axial magnetic excitations that interact with both stator windings as well as improving the torque density. The magnetic field distribution and the static and dynamic performances of the proposed machine are analyzed using the time-stepping finite element method.
