Abstract: This entry covers a range of methods and tools players use in reworking the games they play. It discusses the history of game modifying and establishes its contemporary role in game cultures and within a larger context of co-creative game design and development. Providing examples from both online and single-player games, players' motivations and linkages to other gameplay practices are considered together with the ambivalent relationship between game developers and the players who modify games.
