Abstract: This paper reports on the development of an objective method for evaluating the degree of puckering in garment seams. With this method, a garment is put on a dummy and a seam is scanned by a 3D laser scanning system. The geometric surface of the scanned seam is then processed with a 2D digital filter to obtain a pucker profile by removing the "high frequency" components due to the fabric surface texture and the "low frequency" components due to three-dimensional garment surface contours. From the pucker profile, we can derive a physical parameter, log (σ2), which is linearly related to the subjective pucker grade. From the objectively measured log (σ2), we can objectively evaluate the pucker grade of the garment seam.
