Abstract: Traditional design of engineering materials for industrial processing is mainly based on the macroscopic or average properties. A quantitative specification of the meso-structures is now possible through modern instrumentation and data acquisition technique. The meso-level continuum based microstructure formulation provide a scientific basis for the design and selection of material structures to suit a particular processing route. Examples are drawn from industry to illustrate the importance of meso-structure design (e.g., the type of crystallographic textures, the maximum variation in local textures, the grain size range and distribution, etc.) in improving the formability and machinability of engineering materials.
