Abstract: This paper presents a novel structural damage detection method based on the statistical moments of dynamic responses of building structures under random excitation. The principle of the method is put forward in terms of a single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) system and then extended to multi-degree-of- freedom (MDOF) systems with resort to the least-squares method. The numerical studies on a shear building structure manifest that the proposed method is sensitive to local structural damage but insensitive to measurement noise. Furthermore, the proposed method was experimentally examined to assess its reliability in practical applications. Eight damage scenarios were designed and a series of shaking table tests were conducted on three shear building models before and after damage under white noise or color noise ground excitations. The experimental results matched the theoretical values well and the statistical moment-based damage detection method is demonstrated to be feasible and accurate.
