Abstract: A novel method of classification of fashion styles has been reported as an initial step to establish a dynamic database of the interrelationship between fashion styles and fabric performance. The concept of this novel method is to classify and categorize infinite fashion styles into a finite one. Regarding the infinite fashion styles, each can be interpreted as a combination of two sets namely, design details and garment components/configurations. The method aims to abstract the distinctive features from the design details or garment components and classify them into basic style groups in term of their common features, often with regard to basic geometric forms and shapes. In terms of design details, the basic elements include ruffle, flounce, gathering, drawstring, cowl drape, pleat, tied front, dart, and tuck. More complicated details can be generally categorized as combinations or modifications of these basic details. Likewise these basic details have been fractionized according to their profile as anti-drape or drape, and/or further subdivided in size as big, medium, and small.
