Abstract: Laser surface nitriding of equi-atomic NiTi shape memory alloy has been carried out using a 2kW Nd-YAG laser. A continuous TiN layer on the top of the laser surface alloyed layer was formed on the surface of the NiTi alloy. The LSA layer consisted of dendrites of TiN and NiTi matrix. By subsequent selective etching technique, a network full of three-dimensional TiN dendrites protruding from the surface was obtained. Silicate glass was then sintered on this network and a crack free interfacial layer composed of Si, O, Ti and Ni can be obtained. This interfacial layer can be used to improve the interfacial bonding between the ceramic coating and the NiTi alloy.
